Description

The Sledge Microtome manufactured by H.L. Scientific Industries is a precision instrument designed for producing thin sections of large or hard biological specimens, such as plant stems and roots, as well as for specialized histopathological applications. This microtome is particularly suitable for biological and research laboratories, and can be adapted for use in ear, nose, and throat departments where large specimen sections are required. Additionally, with the incorporation of a freezing attachment, it can function as a freezing microtome.

Key Features and Components:

  • Main Body (Slide-Way): The microtome’s body features three horizontal tracks, each 400 mm in length, for the knife clamping block, and three inclined tracks for the object clamping stage and feeding device. This design ensures stability and precision during sectioning.

  • Knife Clamping Block: Equipped with a ball for securing the knife holder and a handle, the knife clamping block includes two screws to eliminate vibration. The clearance angle of the knife can be adjusted via a screw drive, allowing for precise control during cutting.

  • Object Clamping Stage: This component consists of a sliding stage and an object clamping holder. The holder is equipped with two rack-and-pinion swiveling devices, enabling orientation adjustments for the cutting object. It can be raised or lowered using rack and pinion mechanisms for approximate height adjustments and accommodates specimen blocks up to 30×30 mm in size.

  • Feeding Device: The feed mechanism allows for section thickness adjustments ranging from 1 to 10 microns, in increments of 0.5 microns. The specimen is raised accurately by a micrometer screw fitted with a ratchet gear and lever transmission. The feeding screw has an effective length of 40 mm and features an open-and-close half-nut type, returning to the initial position when the handle is opened. This design facilitates the preparation of thin and accurate paraffin sections and can also be applied for celloidin specimens.
